BUTTING – BuBi®-pipe

Further to our long experience in the production of clad pipes and the con- struction of a calibration machine for duplex pipes and thick walled pipes made from plate, the idea was born to produce mechanically bonded pipes using hydraulic expansion to achieve a perfect bond at the beginning of the nineties.

The advantages of this innovation are quite obvious. Compared with a metallurgically clad pipe, our BUTTING-Bimetal-pipe (BuBi®-pipe) is noted for its cost saving production process and less expensive raw materials. A relevant solid stainless steel pipe would cost 25 % – 40 % more than a BuBi®-pipe.

In 1994 a vision became reality and the first BuBi®-pipes produced in the world left our works. In the meantime we have successfully supplied approx. 420 000 m (approx. 22,000 t) of BuBi®-pipes and can provide an exceptional track record. More than 90 % of our mechanically bonded BuBi®-pipes are produced for the offshore industry and are supplied to renowned companies, like BP, ExxonMobil, Agip, STATOIL or TotalFinaElf.

Due to the constant improvement of the BuBi®-pipes and considerable invest- ments into the most advanced production facilities guaranteeing a high level of process safety, it was possible for us to maintain our position as the leading producer of such pipes in the world.
